Building Sacred Sites: Man's relationship with the measurement of the sun and earth by Karen Jarldane

In ancient times, man was aware of the relationship of the sun, stars, and earth. It was understood that there is a direct connection with the cosmos and earth and all cultures utilized these energies to create harmony and raise the frequency in sacred sites. Ancient man was aware of the sun’s path and cycles. They studied and used measurements from the sun’s path to build sacred sites. During the solstices, the angle of the sun was used as part of the formula used to build anything from stone circles, to elaborate temples and churches. The solstice sun’s angle changed with latitude. Many megalithic structures not only lined up with the sun but also with the stars and constellations. We can see this phenomenon all over the world, from the megalithic temples in Malta, Ireland, England, Spain, and France to the Mayans, Egyptians, the Greeks and Romans.

All major cultures displayed a deep understanding of the sun, moon, and the stars and how these bodies related to earth and the earth’s energies. Water and fire are the two important earth energies that the ancient cultures used to build their sacred sites. Water was called the serpent or snake in the Celtic tradition and fire was called the dragon.

Humans and the earth share a special resonance with water. The water veins carry water through the earth are similar to how our veins that carry blood through our bodies. Since humans have the same amount of water in our bodies as there is on the earth, we are in resonance with the water of the earth. The ancients knew this and found special sources of water for their sacred sites. They were able to manipulate the water outside of us in sacred sites to raise the frequency or vibration of the water within us, thus connecting us to spirit in a deeper way or even physically healing the body.

Fire was the other element used by the ancients. There is the solar fire of the sun and the dragon energy of the earth, found in the fire of volcanoes, seismic activity and geological faults. Faults were utilized in sacred sites to activate the element of fire. Ancient man also put stones on faults and underground water crossings to stabilize seismic activity.

The art of geomancy was very important to ancient people. It began with the need to find water to survive and grew into a sophisticated art. Geomancers were able to sense and find water and faults. They used tools such as a simple olive branch to amplify sensations in their own bodies to find the earth’s energies. When building sacred sites became important, the geomancer/shamans were able to locate the place with the greatest power beneath in the form of underground water veins, faults or both. It was important to find a good location with the proper subterranean energies to give power to the structure built on top of it. With no water or faults under the earth, the power of the temple would be weak.

The ancients also knew about and used different energy nets in their temple building including megalithic temples such as Stonehenge. These nets of energy are like a grid upon the earth. One such net is called the Solar Net. These nets vary in measurement with latitude and they are the basis of sacred geometry (or mandala) of the place. They are used by all the major temple building cultures, including the megalithic societies, the Celts, Egyptians, Mayans, Romans, Greeks, Indians, and Chinese.

All great temples, including stone circles, were built using the measurements of the place or the latitude and the sun’s angle. By using these measurements, the builders could give order and precise qualities to their structures. They could emphasize the sun, moon, or several elements of fire, water, air, earth, ether, and spirit. A sacred geometry mandala drawing of a particular place can be superimposed over a drawing of the stone circles or churches and can be used to explore the energies the builders wanted to enhance. It is exciting to go experience these energies at a sacred site after drawing the mandala of the place. The sun, earth, and elements take on a whole different meaning after experiencing what the ancient builders intended when building their sacred site.

Although the builders of these ancient sites passed on long ago, their secrets have survived through the millennia. Modern geomancers continue to teach the mysteries of the elements, the underground snake and dragon, and the use of the sun and sacred geometry in constructing special places of power.

One such teacher is Dominique Susani, a French master of stones and sacred geometry; he will be coming to Boulder, Colorado in July 2008 to offer instruction in this fascinating traditional art and science.
